Universidad de Sevilla

Description

The University of Seville considers research to be the work of creating, developing and updating scientific, technical, artistic and cultural criteria. Research activity is carried out in the heart of the Departments, University Institutes, and Research Centres; and is supported by public and private funding. The University has a strong commitment to the socio- economical development of the Seville area, and therefore carries out intense transfer of knowledge and technology to society and its economic fabric. It is Campus of International Excellence, with more than 400 research groups, almost 4,500 researchers and close to 7,500 yearly scientific publications with international impact; and with more than 9,000 students doing internships in more than 3,500 businesses. The University ranks third in Spain as far as number of patents generated on a national level, and is the founder of many Technology-Based Businesses.

The School of Engineering is a polytechnic school that offers several engineering degrees, among them the degree in Aerospace Engineering (4-year bachelor plus 2-year master programme). The Group of Aerospace Engineering is a research group that focuses on academic and applied research through research programs and projects in various fields like: aircraft trajectory optimization, air traffic management, and design and control of small unmanned air vehicles.

Key Persons

  • Prof. Damián Rivas Rivas

Prof. Rivas has a degree in aeronautical engineering from the School of Aeronautics (ETSIA) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), and a PhD degree from Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio, USA). He is full professor, with 25 years of teaching experience, presently teaching Flight Mechanics and Air Navigation. He is the director of the Group of Aerospace Engineering, the scientific coordinator of the SESAR WP-E ComplexWorld Network, representing the University of Seville which is one of the members of the network, and member of the scientific committee of the SESAR Innovation Days conference. His main lines of research are aircraft trajectory optimization (in particular, singular optimal control theory and parametric optimization) and air traffic management (including the effects of uncertainty).

  • Dr. Alfonso Valenzuela

Alfonso Valenzuela is aeronautical engineer and PhD from the University of Seville (Spain). In 2007 he joined the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Fluid Mechanics of this university. He currently holds the position of Assistant Professor and lectures on Helicopter Theory and Air Traffic Management. His research focuses on aircraft trajectory prediction and air traffic management, and the integration of weather uncertainty on these two problems.

  • Antonio Franco Espín

Antonio Franco received his degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Seville (Spain) and has a PhD from the same university. In 2009 he joined the Department of Aerospace Engineering of this university; he is currently Assistant Professor, and teaches Aerospace Propulsion Theory and Aircraft Trajectory Optimisation. His research interests include aircraft trajectory optimisation and weather uncertainty impact on aicraft trajectories and air traffic management.

  • Eulalia Hernández Romero

Eulalia Hernandez obtained both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Seville (Spain). Currently she is a PhD student at this same university.  Her thesis is focused on the effects of weather uncertainty on aircraft conflict detection and resolution.
